Recap of the Week:

What a beautiful week! This past week we talked all about apples. We read about the life cycle of an apple in our Scholastic weekly reader. We watched a video on apples and learned the song: "Who Took the Apples for the Apple Tree?". The children completed a worksheet where they had to read the number on each apple's leaf and draw that many seeds on the inside. We've been working on one to one correspondence when counting and number recognition.
The children made apple trees from construction paper and toilet paper rolls. They also made their own stained glass apple with colored tissue, construction paper and contact paper. They can be seen hanging in our windows.
In Religion we reviewed the bible story from last week about Jesus calling his special friends (Andrew, James, John and Peter) to be his followers. We talked about how we can be friends of Jesus.
We continued to work on letter recognition and writing our names.
In our "Ready for School" unit we identified letters and their sounds as we read: "Annie, Bea, and Chi Chi Dolores". We also talked about ways we can work together in the classroom.
On Friday we read about Johnny Appleseed and watched a short video on him. We then made applesauce. The children had so much fun using the apple corer/ slicer. We didn't have time to try the applesauce so we'll have it with snack on Monday.

This Coming Week:

This week we'll continue to finish up some apple activities and begin to talk about Fire Safety. The children will glue apples in order from 1 to 10 on top of a picture of themselves to go along with the book: "Ten Apples up on Top". They will build their own apple trees with blocks and green Popsicle sticks. They will try to see how many apples (red pom poms) they can fit on the tree.
We will meet Mat Man this week. We'll read the book: "Mat Man Shapes" and build Mat Man as a class.
In Religion we'll read the bible story: "Jesus Blesses the Children" and talk about ways we can thank God for loving us.
In our "Ready for School" unit we'll read "Friends at School". Before reading we'll make predictions about the story. We will discuss the story words: lid and scoop. We'll introduce position words this week and play a game called "Teddy Says" similar to "Simon Says" to review the words. We will continue to work on number, letter and shape recognition. We'll also practice identifying and writing our names.

Things to work on at home:
- identifying and writing their first name

-  Putting on their own jacket and zipping

- letter and number recognition
